Residential Interior Case Study

Set above the Yarra River within 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne, this expansive five-bedroom residence is conceived as a deeply personal family home shaped by its waterfront setting, Melbourne’s material character and the maritime history of North Wharf.

Reframing the Plan

Stretching almost forty metres from end to end, the original floorplan was generous in scale but lacked clear hierarchy between private, guest and entertaining spaces.

The redesign re-organises the home into distinct zones, placing the principal suite and family retreat within a more private wing, guest rooms closer to the entry, and the main living, dining, and kitchen spaces toward the river outlook.

Circulation is shortened and simplified, with improved connections between the kitchen, butler’s pantry and entertaining areas. Previously underused spaces are given purpose, while the home office is designed to open or close as needed.

The result is a clearer sequence of spaces that improves privacy, light, movement and the way the home supports both everyday family life and larger gatherings.

A Home Shaped by Place

The material palette is drawn from Melbourne, the river and the industrial history of Seafarers.

Bluestone anchors the interior, referencing a material deeply embedded in Melbourne’s architectural identity. Rough-sawn timber brings warmth and recalls the weathered timber structures along the Yarra.

Blackened steel draws from the former sheds and wharf infrastructure, its varied bronze and blue-black tones giving the material greater depth and refinement.

Unfilled travertine evokes the riverbed below, forming solid bases beneath kitchens, vanities and joinery.

Limewash and sand-textured plaster reference the tactile rendered surfaces of the nearby Mission to Seafarers.

Together, the materials create an interior that feels grounded in place. Raw, refined and distinctly Melbourne.
